Canva resumes and ATS: the export matters more than the brand

A CV designed in Canva is not automatically unreadable to an applicant tracking system, and one made in a CV builder is not automatically safe. What a parser receives is the exported PDF: its text layer, the order that text comes out in and whether the essentials are text at all. Design tools make it easy to build a page that looks right and exports badly, because the editor shows you the picture, not the reading order. This guide is the test to run on the file and what to change when it fails.

The five-minute test

Run it on the PDF you will actually send, not on the design in the editor.

  • Select text. Open the PDF and drag across a paragraph. If nothing highlights, the page is an image and a parser will find no text.
  • Copy everything. Select all, paste into a plain text editor and read it top to bottom.
  • Check the order. Your name, contact details, each job title with its employer and dates should appear together and in sequence. Sidebars often interleave with the main column.
  • Search for your name and email. If the search finds nothing, they are drawn as shapes or sit in an image.
  • Look for lost symbols. Icons for phone, email or skill levels paste as nothing or as stray characters.

Where design-tool CVs usually break

  • Text converted to outlines or flattened into an image on export.
  • Contact details in a decorative header graphic.
  • Two or three columns built from separate text boxes, which copy out in the order the boxes were created.
  • Skill levels shown only as dots, bars or stars.
  • Section headings drawn as images or unusual words instead of Experience, Education, Skills.

How to fix a failing export

Change

  • Rebuild contact details and headings as live text.
  • Put the work history in one column; use a sidebar only for short items you have checked.
  • Write skill levels in words: Excel - advanced.
  • Re-export and repeat the copy test after every change.

Keep out

  • Text inside images or background graphics.
  • Icons as the only label for a phone number or email.
  • Rating bars as the only statement of a level.

When a design-first CV is fine

For a portfolio, a creative role or an application sent straight to a person, visual design can matter more than parsing, and a Canva layout may be the right choice. For an online form or a large employer's portal, start from a single-column structure and check the file. The decision is about where the CV is going, not which tool made it.
