Canva resumes and ATS: the export matters more than the brand

A resume designed in Canva is not automatically unreadable, and it is not automatically ATS-safe. The relevant question is how the exported file stores and orders its text.

Test the PDF, not the editor

Select text in the exported PDF, copy a full section and inspect the order. A visually perfect page can still contain a scrambled or missing text layer.

Common risk points

  • Text converted to an image or outlined shape.
  • Contact details placed only in a graphic header.
  • Columns or text boxes that copy in the wrong sequence.
  • Icons carrying information that has no text equivalent.

Choose based on the application

For a portal with automated parsing, a simple single-column or tested structured layout is the safer starting point. For a direct email, visual design may matter more, but the exported text should still be readable.
