Academic / Research CV template

Academic / Research is the only layout in the collection built around a publication list. It is dense, it is set in one column with the dates hanging in a right-hand gutter rather than in a column of their own, it carries no photograph, and it reorders its own career sections depending on whether you are still reading for a degree. That last behaviour is the part worth understanding before you pick it.

Who this layout is for, and who it is not

The facets give this sheet one role family, academic, and one stage, also academic. It is the only entry in the collection where the stage is not a point on a corporate ladder.

  • Right for: doctoral candidates, postdocs, lecturers, principal investigators and research scientists applying for academic or research posts.
  • Right for: a record where publications, grants, teaching and supervision carry more weight than a job title.
  • Right for: a document that will run long. Academic CVs are allowed to, and the compact density is built for it.
  • Wrong for: an industry application, even a research-heavy one. An industry reader wants the outcome, not the output list, and a general layout is a better container for that.
  • Wrong for: anybody who needs a photograph on the document. This template does not support one at all, which is deliberate.

Why this layout works

The eye lands on the name, the role beneath it and the contact line, then on a masthead rule that separates the identity from the record. There is no portrait to compete with any of that, and no accent panel - the top third is text and one horizontal rule.

Dates hang in a right-hand gutter rather than sitting in a second column. That distinction is the whole reason this layout parses the way it does: the gutter is typographic space beside a single flow of text, not a second reading track, so a reader scans the chronology down the right edge while the extracted text stays in order.

The section hierarchy is the interesting part, because it is not fixed. The renderer checks whether any education entry is still current - whether an end date reads as present, now, or the localised equivalent - and orders the career sections accordingly. Somebody still reading for a degree gets Education, then Experience, then Publications. Somebody who has finished gets Experience, then Publications, then Education.

Density is compact. On a document that runs to four or five pages that is the correct setting: airiness on an academic CV is not elegance, it is an extra page of paper between a committee and your bibliography.

Best roles and best career stage

Academic and research posts, at whatever point in the trajectory you are. The single stage in the facets covers a doctoral candidate and a chair equally, because the document has the same job in both cases.

  • Doctoral candidates and postdocs. The adaptive ordering puts Education first while you are still registered, then flips once you are not.
  • Lecturers and teaching fellows. The academic extra sections carry teaching, supervision and service without forcing them into a Projects block.
  • Research scientists in institutes and national labs. Publications sit directly under the section that establishes the post.
  • Industry researchers applying back into academia. The one case where somebody with a corporate record wants this sheet rather than a general one.

What the template puts first

Research Profile always opens the document. After that the order depends on the record:

  • Still reading for a degree: Education, then Experience, then Publications.
  • Degree finished: Experience, then Publications, then Education.
  • Then, in both cases: Key Achievements, followed by the academic extra sections you have added.
  • Then: Skills, Languages, personal details and References close the document.

Skills sitting near the foot is correct for this document and would be wrong for most of the others. On an academic CV a methods and techniques list is supporting information; the argument is made by the publications and the posts above it.

How Appliora's parser read it

The run recorded 94 out of 100 at a 100% parse rate over 1 page - the third-strongest result among the eight designs documented here, and no critical finding at all.

Everything the run flagged:

  • too few skills extracted - major, 5 points
  • bullets not opening with an action verb - minor, no deduction
  • dates giving only a year - minor, 1 point

Dimensions below 100: dates 83, bullets 96, skills 43.

No reading-order finding, which is the payoff for putting the dates in a gutter instead of a column. The skills dimension is the low one, and that is an artefact of the reference CV rather than of the layout: the reference document is a corporate profile, and an academic sheet asked to hold a corporate skills list will always look thin on that measure.

The dates finding is the one to act on, and it is a writing fix rather than a layout one. The run flagged dates that give only a year. A seniority filter counts months, so a range written as two bare years is four years to a person and an unknown quantity to a parser, which usually resolves it to January at both ends. Writing the month on both ends of every range removes it.

Accents, photo and what you can change

This template does not support a photograph. That is a deliberate limitation rather than a missing feature: the composition has no place to put one, and the conventions it is built for do not expect one. It is one of three sheets in the collection with no photo support at all, and the other two are the ATS-safe layouts.

The accent picker still offers all nine colours - blue, emerald, teal, burgundy, purple, slate, navy, orange and graphite - and the template's own signature is a bespoke deep green outside that set, chosen to sit quietly against a dense page of type.

  • Photo: not supported.
  • Accent: all nine swatches, applied to the masthead rule and the section furniture.
  • Section order: editable, but the career triple reorders itself from your dates - that behaviour is in the layout, not in the order list.
  • Custom sections: the academic extra sections are first-class here, which is how teaching, grants and supervision get real headings rather than being pushed into Projects.

Templates to compare it with

  • ATS Clean - the plainest single column in the collection, and the right pick for the industry applications an academic record sometimes has to make.
  • European - for a research post inside the EU where languages are a formal requirement.
  • Student / First Job - the education-first layout for the stage before a doctoral application.

Questions about Academic / Research

Why can I not add a photo to this template?

Because there is nowhere in the composition for one and the conventions the layout is built for do not expect one. If a photograph is required for the country you are applying in, European and the modern layouts all support one.

Why did my sections reorder themselves?

The career triple is ordered from your dates. If any education entry is still current, the sheet leads with Education, then Experience, then Publications. Once the degree has an end date, Experience leads and Publications follow it directly.

Is an academic CV allowed to run to several pages?

In academic hiring, yes, and this layout is built on that assumption. The compact density is there to keep a long bibliography from adding pages rather than to squeeze a career onto one.

Why did the parser score my skills so low?

The run's skills dimension on this layout came out at the bottom of its range, and that reflects the reference CV rather than your document. The reference is a corporate profile, and a methods list on a research CV looks thin to a check built for a corporate skills section. The layout itself recorded no critical finding and a 100% parse rate.
