How to send your CV by email (subject line and message)
A strong CV attached to a careless email still makes a weak first impression. The email itself is a small, easy thing to get right.
Subject line
Keep it specific: "Application - Marketing Manager - Jane Kowalski" beats a bare "CV" or "Job application". If the posting gives a reference number, include it.
What to write in the body
Three short paragraphs is plenty: who you are and the role you're applying for, one line on why you're a strong fit, and a closing line thanking them for their time. Don't repeat your whole cover letter in the email - attach it separately if you have one.
File name and format
Always send a PDF, and name the file clearly: "FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf" rather than "cv_final_v3.pdf". Recruiters often download dozens of files a day - a clear name means yours doesn't get lost or overwritten.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the attachment entirely - always double-check before sending.
- A generic "To whom it may concern" when the posting names a contact.
- Typos in the subject line, which are often the first thing read.

Renamed my file from "cv2.pdf" after reading this - small thing but felt more professional immediately.
It also helps the recruiter - a clear file name makes yours easy to find again later in their inbox.
Guilty of sending "To whom it may concern" way too often - fixing that this week.
