Marketing manager cover letter example

A marketing letter is read twice: once for what it says and once as a sample of how you write. That is not true of most professions, and it changes the drafting. The letter has to carry a real campaign decision, and it has to do it in prose that would survive being published, because the person reading it commissions copy for a living.

The full letter

Seven years across brand and performance, applying to a direct-to-consumer coffee company.

What each paragraph is doing

  • The opening states the company's problem as a split

Acquisition working, retention not. It then places the answer somewhere the reader does not expect, in the first delivery rather than in the marketing. That sentence is doing two jobs: it proves the candidate has thought past the obvious, and it makes the next paragraph unavoidable.

  • The evidence paragraph shows a research method

Reading 200 cancellation reasons is the most valuable line in the letter. Anyone can report a campaign result; describing how you found the cause tells a marketing director whether you will find causes at their company. The three changes are concrete and cheap, which is itself a signal.

  • The result is bounded

Paid spend did not change is what makes the retention number attributable. Without that clause the reader has to assume the improvement came from somewhere else, and a marketing reader always does assume that. Around a fifth is deliberately imprecise rather than falsely exact.

  • The close names the gap the advert exposes

Retail trade campaigns are missing from the candidate's history and visible in the posting. Naming it converts a reason to reject into a question to discuss, and the follow-up question about shared budget shows the candidate already understands where that role gets difficult.

What to change for your application

  1. Diagnose the company's funnel from the advert. Marketing postings leak their problem: a new channel, a retention target, a rebrand, a first hire. Name what you think the problem is in the opening and be specific enough to be wrong.
  2. Lead with a cause you found, not a campaign you ran. The method is the differentiator. Cancellation reasons, session recordings, twenty customer calls, a search query report: say what you read and how much of it.
  3. Bound every result. Attach the thing that did not change, or the period, or the segment. A marketing number without a boundary reads as a claim rather than a measurement.
  4. Match their register. A letter to a heritage brand and a letter to a performance-first startup should not read the same. The letter is a writing sample whether you intend it or not.
  5. Name the channel you have not run. Most marketing roles span more channels than one person has done. Choosing which gap to disclose is better than having it inferred.
  6. Cut the adjectives. Delete data-driven, creative, results-oriented and passionate from the draft. Each one is replaced by the evidence paragraph or is not needed.

Mistakes specific to marketing letters

  • Writing the letter as a campaign. Headline tricks, one-word paragraphs and a call to action at the end read as a pitch deck. The reader is assessing judgement, not hooks.
  • Quoting a metric with no denominator. Grew engagement 300 percent means nothing without the base, the period and the channel. A marketing reader will notice faster than anyone else.
  • Claiming a rebrand as a personal result. Rebrands involve agencies, budget holders and a board. Name the piece you owned.
  • Listing tools instead of decisions. HubSpot, GA4, Klaviyo, Meta Ads Manager and Figma in a sentence is a skills section that has escaped.
  • Offering unsolicited critique of their marketing. Telling a marketing director their emails are weak, in the first contact, without their data, ends most applications.
  • Sending it with a typo. Unfair everywhere else, decisive here, because proofreading is part of the job being advertised.

The under-200-word version

Marketing roles often receive applications through a form with a short message field. This version keeps the method and the boundary, which are the two parts that persuade.

181 words. The clause worth protecting under a word limit is with no change in paid spend. Cutting it saves five words and costs the paragraph its credibility.

Questions people actually ask

Should a marketing cover letter be creative?

It should be well written, which is not the same thing. A letter that opens with a formatting trick spends the reader's attention on the device rather than the evidence. Ordinary sentences carrying an unusual observation outperform an unusual format carrying an ordinary one.

How many campaign results should I include?

One, in depth, with the method that produced it and a boundary around the result. Three shallow results read as a CV in paragraph form, and the reader already has the CV.

Do I attach a portfolio?

Link it on the CV. In the letter, reference a single piece only when it is the evidence for the paragraph you are writing, and link directly to that piece rather than to a homepage the reader has to search.

What if my numbers are confidential?

Use ratios, directions and relative change: cancellations roughly a third lower, spend flat. A reader would rather see an honest ratio than a precise figure you should not have shared, and how you handle a former employer's data is itself being assessed.

Draft it against the advert you are answering

The Cover Letter Generator reads your CV and the posting and produces this structure: the split you have diagnosed, one campaign with its method, and a close that names the gap.
