Sales Manager CV Example & Writing Guide
A sales manager is one of the few jobs with a scoreboard attached, and the fastest way to fail the read is to hide it. A page of coaching language with no quota on it invites the obvious question about what the number actually was. The second failure is subtler: a manager whose strongest bullets are still their own closing records from four years ago reads as a rep who was promoted and then stopped. This page is one complete sales manager CV, written at nine years with three of them managing.

Why this CV works
Five decisions a manager's CV usually gets wrong, and how this one handles them:
-
The headline number is the team's, with the quota next to it
"EUR 7.1M against a EUR 6.4M quota" is a different claim from "111% of quota". 111% of EUR 6.4M and 111% of EUR 30M are not the same job, and a reader who cannot see the quota cannot tell which one is in front of them.
-
Six of nine is the part that proves it was the team
"6 of 9 reps at or above their individual EUR 720k number" answers what every sales director asks about a manager: did the team perform, or did two strong reps carry a number the manager took credit for? A team at 111% with three of nine at quota is a different organisation.
-
The year the team missed is on the page
FY2024 at 92% of EUR 5.8M sits in the second bullet, with the cause (2 of 7 reps gone in Q1) and what changed after. Leaving it out would leave an unexplained gap in the attainment history, which is worse than the miss.
-
It says what changed about how the team sells
Moving "off single-site pilots onto multi-site agreements with a named executive sponsor" is a decision, and median ACV going from EUR 61k to EUR 84k is what it produced. Coaching and enablement stay invisible until attached to a number that moved.
-
The individual selling years are compressed, not deleted
Six years at Halcyon Print get three bullets, and the strongest is the cycle-length change rather than the 141% year. Carrying a bag is where credibility with reps comes from, so it stays; it just stops being the loudest thing on page one.
Professional summary examples
Entry level
A first management CV should say plainly that the leadership was informal, and name what was actually owned. Claiming a team you mentored but did not manage falls apart in the first interview.
Mid level
Team size, team quota, attainment, how many reps hit it, one deal-shape number. That is the whole brief.
Senior
At senior level forecast accuracy earns its place beside attainment, because it is the claim that affects the hiring director's own board reporting.
Experience bullet examples
Twelve rewrites, weak form and strong form. Every figure is Diarmuid's and invented for this page: use the quota you actually carried, the team you actually ran and the year you actually missed. A borrowed number survives until someone asks how the territory was split.
- Weak
- Responsible for managing a sales team.
- Stronger
- Led 9 account executives against a EUR 6.4M new business quota and closed EUR 7.1M, with 6 of 9 reps at or above their individual EUR 720k number.
- Why
- The last clause is the one managers leave out, and it is what separates a team that performed from two reps who carried it.
- Weak
- Consistently exceeded quota by over 120%.
- Stronger
- Finished FY2025 at 111% of a EUR 6.4M team quota, up from 92% of EUR 5.8M the year before.
- Why
- A percentage with no quota beside it is a number the reader cannot use. Put the currency figure next to every attainment claim.
- Weak
- Ranked in the top 5% of managers nationally.
- Stronger
- Ranked 2 of 6 sales managers on team attainment in FY2025 and joined the company's Leaders Circle.
- Why
- Top 5% of eleven people is second place. Write the position and the size of the group, or leave the ranking off.
- Weak
- Improved forecasting.
- Stronger
- Brought quarterly commit forecasts inside 6% of actual closed revenue for five of six quarters, after two quarters missed by more than 20%.
- Why
- A bad forecast becomes the sales director's problem upstream, so give the tolerance and the count of quarters.
- Weak
- Hired and onboarded new sales reps.
- Stronger
- Hired 5 account executives in 14 months and cut median ramp to first closed deal from 7 months to 4.5 by rebuilding the first 30 days around live call shadowing.
- Why
- Ramp is a manager metric in a way attainment is not: a rep closing two months earlier is roughly a quarter of a quota recovered per hire.
- Weak
- Managed the team's pipeline.
- Stronger
- Held pipeline coverage at 3.4x of quarterly quota and raised self-sourced pipeline from 22% to 41% of the total by making 5 prospecting hours a week a scheduled block.
- Why
- Coverage alone can be inflated by leaving dead deals open; pairing it with who sourced the pipeline is what makes it mean something.
- Weak
- Coached reps on deals.
- Stronger
- Ran weekly deal inspection against a 5-point qualification checklist; committed deals slipping past their close date fell from 38% to 17% over three quarters.
- Why
- Coaching is invisible until it moves slip rate, win rate or cycle length. Pick the one yours actually touched.
- Weak
- Rolled out a new sales methodology.
- Stronger
- Put MEDDIC into Salesforce as required fields from stage 3 onward and held the line for two quarters; stage 3 to close win rate went from 22% to 31%.
- Why
- Say where it was enforced and what moved, or an interviewer will assume the methodology was a slide deck.
- Weak
- Handled territory planning.
- Stronger
- Redrew 4 territories by shipper size rather than by county, which put 60% of Tier 1 freight accounts with the 3 reps who came from the industry.
- Why
- Patch design is one of the few things a manager controls outright. State the logic you changed.
- Weak
- Retained top performers.
- Stronger
- Kept 8 of 9 account executives through a year of territory redesign; the single departure was an internal move into customer success.
- Why
- Retention through a change that usually causes attrition is credible. A flat "low turnover" claim reads as luck.
- Weak
- Delivered strong results in a challenging year.
- Stronger
- Closed FY2024 at 92% of a EUR 5.8M quota after 2 of 7 reps left in Q1, and carried 3 open territories for a full quarter before backfilling.
- Why
- This is how to write the year you missed: attainment, cause in plain terms, no softer word than missed. Skipping the year leaves a hole more suspicious than the miss.
- Weak
- Worked closely with marketing.
- Stronger
- Agreed a written definition of a qualified lead with marketing and rejected 90 of 340 handovers against it in the first quarter; accepted-lead to opportunity conversion rose from 18% to 29%.
- Why
- The rejection count is what shows the definition had teeth.

- Writing a performance improvement plan a rep can actually pass
Soft skills worth proving
- Giving a rep bad news about their number without losing them
- Defending a forecast to a board that wants a different answer
- Selling alongside a rep without taking the deal off them
Education and certifications
Sales is one of the few fields where the degree stops mattering almost immediately and nobody pretends otherwise. Keep it to degree, institution and years, below experience. If you came into sales from another field, one line is useful when that field is the one you now sell into.
Certifications
- Sales methodology certification (MEDDIC Academy, Challenger, Sandler or similar) - Worth a line when the advert names the methodology, because that means the team runs on it. Otherwise it competes with your attainment history for space and loses.
- Salesforce Administrator (ADM-201) - Unusual for a manager and quietly persuasive: it says you can build the pipeline report yourself.
No certification gets a sales manager hired. Attainment history does. List at most two, and only if they match the advert.
How an ATS reads this CV
Appliora's ATS Checker runs 14 checks against an uploaded file and shows the text its parser pulled out. Four of them catch what sales CVs do to themselves.
-
Format traps
Sales candidates love an attainment visual: a bar chart of quota against closed by quarter, a gauge, a table of merged cells with a coloured percentage in each. Text inside a chart image is not text, so the parser finds a heading and then nothing. Write the attainment history as a plain line instead: FY2025 111% of EUR 6.4M, FY2024 92% of EUR 5.8M. Keep the chart for the copy you email a hiring manager.
-
Bullet quality
This is the check a sales CV lives or dies on. It counts how many bullets carry a figure and how many open with an action verb. A sales CV with no digits in it is its own kind of warning sign: the job generates a number every month, so a page without one reads as a number the candidate chose not to show.
-
Consistent dates
Sales has real job hopping in it and real involuntary exits after a bad year, and both produce short stints. Write months as well as years for anything under eighteen months, so nobody has to guess whether 2023 to 2024 means three months or twenty-two.
-
Concrete skills
Sales skills blocks fill with orphan fragments. "MEDDIC", "SFDC" and "B2B" alone read as noise next to "MEDDIC qualification" or "Salesforce pipeline reporting". Twelve recognisable entries score better than forty tokens.
